Born in the North
Carolina foothills, Thad Cox grew up
just north of Winston-Salem in
Stanleyville. Whether it was drawing,
painting or sculpture, he always had a
great passion for art. By the time he
graduated from High School he had
won several major awards and over a
hundred ribbons for his work in state
and local competitions.
Living just 30 minutes south of Mount
Airy, Thad was inspired to begin his
Mayberry series in the mid 1980s. With
his love for the show combined with
his talent for portraits, he has
released 10 Mayberry limited edition
prints. Thad has sold thousands of
prints nationwide with some of the
editions selling out. He also has sold
work to people outside the U.S. and
several times his work has been on
national TV.
Thad also has a variety of other
prints depicting celebrities including
John Wayne, Elvis, and local
landmarks.

creating his version and style of face
jugs and mugs. Thad was and is best
known for his life-like portraits.
Presently, Thad teaches art at West
Stokes High School and lives in King,
NC with his wife Sonya and their four
children. During the fall, he can be
found at "Mayberry Days" and the
"Autumn Leaves Festival" in Mount
Airy, NC and the "Barbeque Festival"
in Lexington, NC displaying and
selling his work. When one sees his
work for the first time there is no
hiding the love he has for his home
and State.
